Evolving from its inception in 2012, Grounded 60 is an ongoing exploration of the 1960s, an era of Carter's preadolescence during which she gained ideological independence and creative power. It was a glamorous time but also fraught with civil unrest and controversy. Carter watched, wide-eyed and happy to be in the midst of what felt like radical liberation. The advent of full on Rock n' Roll, avant-garde Jazz, Blues, Funk, Contemporary art born of Modern art, long hair for men and women, drugs, sex, hippy culture, and mod fashion…this exotic time was like none other. This series attempts to capture the frenetic energy of exponential change through loose, erratic gestures. Carter uses her paint to form tension between boundaries of color, ushering in the high frequency of imagery resulting from counterculture gone mainstream in the 60s.
